When I applied to teach in Korea it was the first part of November. I still wasn't sure about this crazy idea of mine, but since I felt like there were lots of little voices asking me about it, I felt like I should probably pay attention and at least try. A long time ago, my dad told me that he didn't care what I did, as long as I tried. Even if I failed, that was ok, I just needed to try. I've kind of used that as my mantra when I've thought about things. Over the years I've tweaked my mantra a little bit. Now it's become: As long as I'm walking down a path and trying to do things I should along the way, my feet will get directed to where I need to go. If I'm not walking, I won't go anywhere.
So when I went ahead and applied for this teaching position, I knew that I was trying to do something and that if it wasn't what I needed to do, I would be sent in another direction. Plus, I could always say no and not get on the plane. When I received the email from the recruiter that they wanted to do a phone interview, I was excited and nervous all at the same time. Was this what I needed to do??
Right before my recruiter was going to call me for my phone interview, I got nervous. I've done a billion interviews over the years. You usually get asked the same questions. We even took a class in college where you had to practice interviewing, (which was ridiculous, but I digress). Anyway, when my phone rang and I looked down at the number, it was something like: +03-080-87638. My heart jumped into my throat and so I answered.
My recruiter was super nice and was Korean, but her English was good and we started to have our conversation. Her name is Jiyeon. She told me that I was a perfect candidate for teaching in Korea and I was immediately excited and a bit relieved. She told me a few things and asked me a few questions. It was a pretty short conversation...mostly because I hadn't started any of the paperwork requirements that I needed. Boy howdy!! There is some crazy paperwork that needs to be done. It's not like I have to give one of my kidneys, but they are things that are really time consuming. She told me to get started on the documents that I would need and then let her know in a few weeks how things were going so we could get me to Korea. I'll tell you more about Jiyeon later, but just know that I like her a lot!!
